Leading Lady Hair: Joan Crawford in "The Women"

“I think that the most important thing a woman can have- next to talent, of course- is her hairdresser.” ― Joan Crawford

Everyone loves “The Women” – in fact I could have sworn I'd reviewed it just a couple of years ago but I can't find the damned thing.  Aaaanyway...the one thing I didn’t love then was Joan Crawford’s hair.  I didn’t understand how her character was supposed to be sexy when she was such an ice queen with this curly top just overpowering the screen.  However, on rewatching the film this weekend I have completely changed my opinion.  Yes, her hair is a crazy ball of quite unruly frizz but it represents the wildness of her character – the leopard within...

So, inspired by my new love of Joan’s tresses and my own newly dark hair (courtesy of the lovely Lucie at Rockalily), I decided to attempt this for myself.  The ideal hair length for this is shoulder length and above, a layered middy cut would work amazingly but I got away with this on my one length bob too.

As usual I went for a wet set – the items needed for this are:

·         - Rat tail comb (preferably with a metal tail – the plastic ones aren’t sharp enough in general)
·         - Small rollers and lots of them – I used foam rollers but anything small will do
·         - Setting lotion – I used motions foamy set as it is easy to apply
·         - A brushing out brush – I prefer a Denman
·        -  Bobby pins to match your hair
·       -  Hairspray – I prefer Tresemme freeze hold

First I combed my hair out all over and set in a low side part, I tend to part level with the peak of my eyebrow arch but you can pretty much part yours wherever you like.

I then applied setting lotion all through the bottom half of the hair at the back and to the roots at the top.  Note: you don't want setting lotion on the crown of the hair at the back.

Starting on the smaller aside I took thin sections, about the width of the roller, and rolled four or five skinny sponge rollers in tightly, rolling the hair under.  The key here is to get lots of rollers in – more than you think you need certainly.  This is one style where you actually want frizz.

You then run rollers in the same way down the think side of the hair, just one row, going in no further than one rollers width. Finally, leaving the crown flat, roll the back hair onto the same size rollers, going up no further than the nape of the neck.

I then stuck a hair net on and slept on it.  It was jolly nice to sleep in foam rollers instead of hard perm rods I can tell you!

The next morning, take out all the rollers and brush out the hair. You want to keep the frizz so you don’t want to brush too much, fight the urge!  I started by brushing downward then in an upward direction to fluff it all up.  It kinda looks scary st this stage.

The key to keeping this style looking 30s is the flat crown, here is where your bobby pins come in.  I added a row of bobby pins from ear to ear long the nape of the neck, inserted horizontally, then, to cover them, brushed the curls up and fluffed them over the pins.

Finally, when you have arranged the fluff approximately where you want it (I went for a Joan style slight dip over the forehead)  you want to spray on the hairspray and then, while the spray is still damp, mould the hair into the shape you want by sort of gently pushing it in all over.  This helps make the hair more dense and less flyaway looking.

Tada!

Hollywood Hair - Style 1 - Ava Gardner

So - this week I attempted hairstyle 1 – the Ava Gardner – a delightfully tousled and casual, yet glamorous looking number that just screams 50s starlet.

It was a VERY easy set as the only bit you need to be strict about is the standing curls on the top of the head.  These are rolled toward the part.  The rest is just curled any old how.

The brush out was easy, just a gentle brush out all over, then isolating the fringe section and styling as you please.

So - here are a two frankly terrifying pictures of me with no make up and my hair in curlers.  apologies for the yellow light, it was dark when I took these, I'm really not jaundiced - honest.

you can see the top curls are standing and rolled toward the part.  the back is, frankly, a mess - but it did say to not use any particular pattern.  I used the same rough setting all week.

Results:

Monday: This I styled closest to the image in the setting pattern, bearing in mind my hair is somewhat longer than Ava's.

First I took out all the pins and brushed the back and sides out loosely.  Then, for the fringe, I left it do what it wanted - given this was the first attempt.  It wanted to wave so I went for a very defined wave effect, brushing the fringe out fairly heavily over my hand until it formed one big wave and placing it where I wanted, holding the wave down and then spraying madly.  I like this as it incorporates a finger wave effect but with some volume.

Tuesday: I tried a looser effect, so set it back dry and didn't spritz with water.  I then just brushed it out loosely and came out with this somewhat Marilynesque curly top.  Not perfect by any means but I think that's the point really, some 50s outfits do requite a much less set look.

sometimes you feel an ass taking pictures of yourself and then this happens
Wednesday: was my favourite though - same set only brushed under at the back over a round brush and the top pin curls made into curls around the face instead of a wave.  These were just shaped with my hands and sprayed into place.  I added serious height here with a little backcombing as I was feeling a bit flamboyant!

I was lazy the rest of the week and put my hair up.  I know, I'm bad but 3 days in a row is a good long slog for me!

Verdict:
I like this set - it is nice to know that one can get so many looks from one very simple and very quick to put in set.  I think the standing pin curls at the fringe could easily be replaced with rollers to be honest.  This is a set I'll definitely use again.

Let me know what you think.  Which looks do you prefer?

This week I am going to work on the next set in the book - the Hedy Lamarr.

This is a centre parted style - I haven't really done a centre part since I discovered vintage several years ago.  Centre parts always make me think of the 70s.  Not my favourite era, and so I am nervous of this one.

Hollywood hair - the BEST pin curl technique videos

Just a quick post for anyone who may want to follow along with my pin curl quest.

I've been scouring YouTube for the best pin curl tutorials and can highly recommend these from the lovely Vivid Makeup.  These two vids taught me more about pin curling in 20 minutes than I got from years of experimentation.

Be aware - this is not a visual guide but a long description of technique.  Don't be put off by her non vintage look here, this gal knows her stuff.  Part 1 below.

For a visual guide you can either look at Vivid Makeup's waves tutorial or, of course, there is the divine Lisa Fremont Street with another YouTube two parter.

Enjoy!

Old lady rinses a go-go!

So, I promised a brief post about my new gingery-ness and here it is.

I’ve been blonde for a long as I can recall, I was naturally white blonde as a child and it darkened to a medium blonde by my teens, when I started dying it back to a lighter colour. I started with highlights (ugh – how I loathe highlights) and slowly built up to the flat platinum I’ve sported over the past 5 years or so.

I’ve flirted with different colour rinses, from a subtle ashy tone to blue to Mrs Slocombe pink. How I loved Mrs Slocombe pink – but sadly it isn’t really conducive to a work environment, even one as relaxed as mine...

Anyway, lately I’ve been hankering for a change, the problem with the blonde is that it looks very ratty when unwashed / when the roots start showing and, not being as well heeled as Ms Monroe, I can’t really afford weekly touch ups! As a result I’ve been considering a darker shade or *gasp* going back to my natural brown. Not that I know what my natural brown looks like anymore, but I’m assuming something like this.

Full of the wind of change *parp* I wandered along to my fave hair salon, the amazing Rockalily Cuts in Shoreditch and spoke to the delicious Lucie Luella about my options. Lucie, being a sensible girl, explained to me that going dark from my current white blonde would be very difficult to do and impossible to reverse if I didn’t like it, so we decided to look at what else we could do. I’ve always had a predilection for the "old lady" rinse look and so, on googling I found this:

pic shamelessly stolen from http://notyournormaldoll.blogspot.co.uk without permission, apologies

Lucy explained that this would most likely be possible as the effect of a red dye on my blonde would be similar to this red dye on the lady in the pictures naturally white hair. Now the only problem is that this dye doesn't really exist in the colours usually stocked by the modern hairdresser. Not to be discouraged however, my intrepid coifeusse set about concocting her own blend of colours.

Fuelled by two bottles of Stella Artois and adrenaline I let her apply the stuff to my hair and lo and behold – it worked. My hair is a glowing, unrealistic, apricot. I feel like fashion icon space alien - superhero.  Rawr!

Both completely unreal in tone but within the realms of realism by just enough to prevent my employer commenting.
I love it. So much I took pics of myself on the way home and sent them to my friends.

So much so I posted pics on here.

So much so I wrote this post and added this pic of me in the toilet cubicle at work.

Frankly, I’m in love. And a little scared to wash my hair as I know the colour will fade as reds are wont to do.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Rockalily cuts. So far they have given me my best ever cut and my best ever colour.

Thanks Lucie, Ree and Elly!

Blog of the month: The Pink Retro Powder Room

Another of my very favourite blogs to share with you - this month the divine Miss Amethyst's Pink Retro Powder Room.

The lady herself is a marvel - still in her teens and already wearing a full and perfect vintage look.  She is a cosmetology student and regularly shares her knowledge with the rest of us in Internet land by posting fabulous hair How To's.  She is so good that she can turn her hand (and her hair) to anything - actually letting us vote on which style we want.  I have her to thank for my recently gained victory roll skill and am forever indebted.

This gorgeous gal has a real talent and I also adore her well put together outfits.

She is a bundle of positivity, style and skill and I urge you all to visit her online salon regularly.

New Years Revolution

Yep, I know it is supposed to be resolution but I'm planning some big changes in 2011 (in addition to my keeping my nails resolution mentioned in my last post) and so revolution seemed more appropriate.  2010 was terrible though, so whatever happens it will be a huge improvement.  Roll on 2011!

Not all of this is vintage related, so I hope it isn't too dull for you.

1)  I am going to give up smoking:  I tried about 3 times this year and kept failing, however research (google haha!) says that most people succeed around their seventh attempt.  As such I'm going to keep trying.  Official quit date 2 January.

2) I am going to seriously curb my shopping habit:  I spend far too much on eBay on things I do not really need.  As such I am going to do a full review of my wardrobe, work out what I actually need (i.e. items to complete outfits) and then compile a needs and wants list.  I can only buy the needs, with the wants being limited to one every month.  Still sound excessive?  You have no idea what my shopping habits are like (this month 5 hats, a cocktail shaker set, a dress, a bag, a skirt, some books, some vintage glassware,12 pairs of vintage stockings, several knitting patterns, a dress and some pin-up art - I only needed the stockings...).  I am also going to do a full wardrobe audit and sell anything that doesn't fit, doesn't flatter or isn't right in some other way and will make this an annual thing to keep on top of things.

3)  I am going to lose the extra weight I've put on (damn you Depo Provera!) by improving my diet (less carbs, more veg, meat free days) and by walking home from work (once it stops being scary dark by 4pm).  I might even try cycling again...though that might be a bit ambitious.

4) I am going to improve my knitting skills by tackling fairisle, annoying tiny 4 ply wool, circular needles and cable knitting.  I am also going to try sewing again.  I already have the yarn and the fabric I need for the projects I have earmarked and as such I'll expand my wardrobe and save money at the same time.

5) I am going to master the pincurl.  I am going to work my way through all the roll and bang sets in all my vintage hair books and downloads.  Probably choosing one a fortnight or one a month.

6) I am going to start meditating.  I've realised I spend very little time away from stimulation (phnar) as I am always on the phone, on the internet, watching TV or reading.  I need time off and process stuff.  I'm hoping this will help break my negative thought patterns.

7) I am going to decorate the flat.  My lounge needs the walls painting and some lampshades.  I have earmarked these reproduction bakelite shades.  Am tempted to change the switches too.

8) I am going to continue updating and growing this blog, hence the little poll in the side.  I'd like to know what you want to read about.  Please let me know what will keep you coming back for more.  I'd love to get to the stage where I have sponsors and stuff, I really would.

That's it for now - lots of things to think about.

What do you think of my list?  Are you making resolutions this year, vintage based or otherwise?

Gin Soaked Girl - the chap ball and my fabulous dress!

Just a quick post really, as so many others have or are writing their own experience of the evening and to be quite honest my memory is somewhat hazy...

So, Saturday night was the second Grand Anarcho Dandyist ball, as run by The Chap magazine.  I went to the first bash and wasn't going to miss the second, this year held in the beautiful surroundings of the Bloomsbury Ballrooms.

I was the guest of the ever stunning Fleur de Guerre and so thought it worth making a little extra effort, and luckily, just the week before, I had bought the perfect dress from Gem of Bake do and Mend.

Gem's pic:

My badly taken pic:

I also set and styled my hair in a waved pageboy, using my wonderful Mervin clips and perm rods and then brushing the curls under.

I arrived just before 9pm after a very glamorous bus ride through London and quickly found my chums - Gem, Fleur, Bethan (the blogless), Jeni of Yesterday Girl (who was running the Vintage Dating service typing out the love letters) and the wonderful Miss Penny Dreadful herself, whose blog also features a review of the night.

The night was wonderful - fantastic acts including my very favourite, Mr B. the Gentleman Rhymer, entertained us.  We danced and drank until the am.  Unfortunately though, I didn't realise quite how strong the gins were.

Very, if this posey photo and my illness the next day are anything to go by (I have been assured they were LARGE doubles and I am not a complete wuss).

Photo courtesy of Miss Penny Dreadful, arrogance courtesy of booze.

I haven't included pics of the other gals partly because I didn't take any and don't want to steal from chums and partly because I'm vain.  Hah.

The best pic of us all together was taken by Jeni and I'm sure she will post it up soon enough so keep visiting her blog for her second Chap Ball post.

A quick hair and outfit post - The Candlelight Club

I have again been neglecting this place, but with good reason - firstly, I've lost my camera somewhere in my flat and secondly I've been planning lots and lots of lovely blog posts for the future.

I just have to gather the energy to write the darn things now.

So, to get me back in the swing please marvel at my hair and outfit for last night's Candlelight Club.  Hee hee.

The hair was done in my basic set with the curls brushed under to form a shorter looking do and the fringed brushed over my hand to create a curl.  I then curled a few pieces around a mascara tube to get a definite set curl and sprayed it all firmly into place.

I wasn't sure what to wear for the bash, as I've gained a whopping half stone (three kilos) in the space of just three months, and choice was therefore somewhat limited.  After trying on a dozen things that wouldn't zip up and almost getting stuck in one lovely 40's dress, I finally settled on the below outfit, mixing dark red with dark brown - brave for me as I usually end up in just one colour.  I'm terrible at vintage colour schemes.

Apologies for the grubby mirror and iPhone photo.  Where is that darn camera!!

Here are the constituent pieces - again, apologies for poor picture quality:

Big bow hat (in a dark brown that is so close to black that it can be worn with either):

Dark brown Corde handbag:

Dark red 40's suit with gorgeous pocket detail:

Dark brown leather vintage shoes (really do need a clean - oops!):

Pink reverse carved lucite brooch and matching earrings:

Myself and two very lovely chums arrived at the club a little late - and as it was completely sold out we failed to get a seat and missed the gourmet sandwiches on offer.  However we enjoyed ourselves immensely - the band were fabulous and there was some burlesque too.

It did feel a little odd being in all 40's garb at a 20's themed event but no one seemed to take the dressing up too seriously, thankfully.

This is possibly my favourite event on the vintage scene, the atmosphere is very relaxed and there is a really mixed crowd - from Hackney hipster to New Sheridanite.

I just wish I'd had my darned camera!  Photos of the event can be found here.
