In the pink! Latest shopping finds and suggest me a dress pattern...

Sorry I've not been around lately, I've been busy at work and have had a house guest so finding time to write for here has been impossible.

Anyway, I had a lovely day of thrifting on Saturday and just wanted to share my glorious finds with you.  Almost all in a shade of pink.

My first purchase was this wonderful hat, dark red with a pinky orange band.  I bought this from Past Caring in Islington and it came with two black hat pins which area little rusty but easily cleaned.  All for £8!

They had the hat listed as 60's but I was fairly sure it was late 40's and took it into a couple of the better vintage shops in the area and had it dated as such, so I'm very happy.  It has some great creases in it and the trim is turned beautifully.

Whilst there I also picked up a darling rose pink slip and a fabulous 50's crochet pattern for DK wool.  I'm always thrilled when I find vintage patterns in anything above 4 ply.

I then wandered up the road and found a great stall selling vintage haberdashery oddments and picked up two belt buckles and some buttons which are an incredibly close match for one of the buckles.

The green buckle is cracked but I plan to Make Do and Mend it with a dab of superglue.  It was just too beautiful to pass by with that lively green on cream and deco style.

So ladies - I need some idea for what to make for these items.  I'm thinking some late 40's dresses.  Any pattern suggestions would be very welcome.  I'd love to use those big pink buttons and belt together.

Oh, and I was naughty and bought a watch.  Modern but vintage style - rose gold.  I hope I love it as much in real life as I do in the picture.

  1. Some lovely bits here. I can't help with patterns as I don't sew, but as long as you choose a dress with a self belt you should be able to incorporate everything you want.

  2. fantastic finds! I'm especially in love with the hat (which I think could even be 30s, but I'd have to peek inside it) and the buckles and buttons (look like 30s bakelite to me!) Drooling!

  6. oooh love the buttons and buckles I'm a demon for picking up stuff like that! Sewing ideas, mmm, I guess the best it to trawl your stash of patterns and see what comes to mind, or get trawling ebay or etsy!

I have a watch from that maker, bought years ago, like yours rose gold, I love it!

  7. Oh lovely - I've missed you and your wonderful shopping. Lovely hat - I agree with the Baroness VV - the way the brim nearly disappears neatly at the back of the neck says 30s to me.

Your habi finds are terrific. If you go to etsy and type in 'sewing pattern 40s shirtdress' there are loads there where you could use both the buttons and buckle. Can't wait to see what you'll find to do with these.

  8. Thanks everyone, the watch is from Skagen, I got it on evilBay. A treat for myself after a really crapola week. I'm pleased the hat is 30's. I just wasn't sure, its not a shape i'm familiar with as I'm more 40's architectural on the hat front. I may do a hot collection post soon - though I may have to split it into twoposts, looking at the sheer number of titfers on my shelves...

I don't have many dress patterns at all, I'm a newbit swerer and have made a couple of skirts but thats it. I need something fairly simple and easy to grade as my propertions aren't very vintage, sadly.

  12. Oooh, that hat is lovely. I am really feeling the urge to buy more hats at the moment. I've never really worn them, but I've got a couple recently and I just love wearing them.

No pattern suggestions here I'm afraid as another no sewer (must learn!)

  13. Lovely hat! Though it's late '40s, I think you could also get away with even an early '30s look with that, it has that slight cloche-y look to it.
