In defence of the headscarf

Today I have been accused of "copping out" by wearing a headscarf to work.  Apparently the be-headscarfed 40s look is cliche and lazy and wasn't really that common.

So, in defence of the headscarf, please enjoy the below:

  1. I wish I could get away with wearing a headscarf to work! Alas, I work neither in a vintage boutique, nor a munitions factory...

  2. *tsk!* headscarves were very common!! My great grandma wore one very frequently and I recently got a scarf lesson from a woman whose aunt wore them constantly during the war. I have two beautiful 1940's silk scarves with a built-in headband so all you have to do is slip it on and you have a fashionable, practical head covering, no tying required. Aside from factory girls, women wore fashionable scarf turbans for evening wear. Rock the scarf, girl!! X

  3. When I wear my head scarves to work the guys say "that's a fetching hat"... that's working in an all male environment for you, enough said really lol.

Oh Lisa, I did reply to your comment on my quitting smoking post but blogger turned it into another comment on my post and not a reply to your comment like it was suppose to. Emily x

  5. I wear headscarfs at the office quite often. At the beginning my colleques asked my, if I wanna clean the floor after a meeting but now, during the years, they get used to it, even make compliments. So go for it!

  6. Hello, I've just recently found your lovely blog and am enjoying your recent posts. Yes to head scarves - I have several my late grandmother used to wear and would never part with them.

  7. Haha, if you ask me turbans are a god send. Do you find when you dress vintage all the time people tend to pick holes is in things- well I do! I remember going to a museum and a guy said they wore brighter lipstick in the war (I was wearing a deep pink at the time), - yeah like red was the only colour- pft! I also had a lady come into the place where I worked saying ‘oh those shoes are wrong’- er excuse me, I’m not in a museum or re-enactment and I am allowed to wear some pretty 70’s sandals if I so wish!
    Anyway rant over…

  8. I hope you retorted back with something as equally scathing. The rotters.

  9. I love headscarves, people wore them all the time as they were very practical and allowed women to do other things in the busyness of the war when the didn't always have time for their hair, as well as hiding the pin curls. I frequently wear headscarves and I love them so much!

  10. It's definitely not a cop out! After all, the headscarves were designed for wear at work! Perhaps if you went out to dinner at a fancy restaurant and elected to wear a headscarf, it may be deemed inappropriate, but I, as you are, am thoroughly pro-headscarf!
